Learning to Play Easy Guitar Tabs

Not everyone who wants to learn to play the guitar is eager to learn to read music, which is why easy guitar tabs are ideal for some. Certainly, many new guitar owners and players simply hope to learn to play some songs that they know and sound pretty good in the process. For those who do not want to start at the beginning, learning music theory and preparing for a lifelong dedication to growing musically, guitar tabs offer a jump start, of sorts, in guitar playing.

Reading Guitar Tabs

In order to read easy guitar tabs, you must become acquainted with your guitar. Your guitar has six strings, each representing a note, and the long narrow part where you finger these notes is called the fret board. Guitar tabs are written on staff of six lines, each line representing a string. A number is placed on the appropriate line to instruct you where to place your finger for a given note. For example, a 3 on the E line means that you need to place your finger on the third fret, and on the E string.

Learning to Play Chords

A chord is a sound that consists of several notes at once. Even easy guitar tabs will often include one or more chords. A tab for a chord will have fret numbers placed vertically on the six-lined staff, indicating that the notes are all played at once. Take the time to practice these chords a few times before trying to play the song because the first few times you play the chord, it will take some time to find your finger placement. Once you have played the chords several times, your fingers will more readily find their placement.

Finding Guitar Tabs

The internet is an excellent resource for finding easy guitar tabs for all of your favorite songs. Some sites simply offer downloads, while others have video instructors to teach you the proper technique for holding your instrument and positioning your hands.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Guitar tabs are ideal for those who want to play a guitar as a hobby. If you have purchased an acoustic guitar so that you can play for your own enjoyment or strum by a fireside, then learning music may not be necessary for you. If, however, you would like to play with a band or turn your guitar playing into a career, then you need to know that easy guitar tabs do not address rhythm, making it difficult to play with others, and it offers no understanding of overall musical theory.
